Duffel/Backpack DIY Project

002Here is a project that I am working on. A duffel style backpack for Sheila’s car, a hatchback SUV. Constructed of 1000 denier Cordura nylon, 500 denier Cordura nylon attachments, polyester lining, YKK #10 coil compartment zippers, and heavy nylon straps with adjustable side release buckles. Camo pattern is True Timber MC2 – purple with lavender accessories.

The pack measures 24″ long, 16″ wide, and 10″ tall, making it handy to organize and store belongings in the vehicle. It will be mounted to an aluminum backpack frame, making it handy to transport, should the vehicle have to be abandoned. In that scenario, stored items should include food, water, shelter, first aid, appropriate clothing, area maps, light, and means of self defense.

There are two 4″ deep zippered pockets, one on either end, one of which has a MOLLE /PALS attachment panel, 011and a 15″ main compartment which has a MOLLE/PALS panel along one side010, and a 12″ X 5″ X 3″ zippered pouch along the other side.009The main compartment MOLLE/PALS panel and pouch panel also have Velcro opening pockets behind them. Lots of storage options in this design.

There are two compression straps over the main compartment, leaving access to the end pockets available.008The zippers are covered with flaps to aid in water resistance when carried in an upright position.

This is my first time sewing a pack type project. Since this was my original idea, I had no plans or instructions to go by. I gained a lot of knowledge in construction technique and component application sequencing. Stitches are much easier to apply, than to remove. Sewn on my 1950 Singer 201-2 “Centennial” model sewing machine.

Note: MOLLE is an acronym for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. PALS: Pouch Attachment Ladder System.

    1. Hi Edith.

I purchase my fabric and thread on ebay from ebay seller “threaddirect” https://www.ebay.com/sch/threaddirect/m.html?item=282210201467&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562. They have a great selection of camos and colors, and great service, as well. I especially like the “True Timber” patterns for camo, using 500 and 1000 denier Cordura fabric where applicable. They also offer same/similar paterns in cotton/poly, taffeta, and other compositions, which I use for linings. I use their T70 and T90 polyester threads for these heavy projects. My machine does not like nylon thread, so I stick with what works the best, polyester.

Webbing – I just look for the best deal on ebay. I usually get Country Brook Design® webbing. Consistently good quality. Standard and heavy capacities, depending on application.
